In 2024, Jamie Hewlett created Clones – a body of work that depicted a dystopian world in which clones are a reality. In fact, the works were sensitively hand finished silkscreens and so they were not really clones at all, but unique artworks within a series.

Since the body of work sold out last year, unreleased and untouched prints have been in storage at Jealous Studios. We must now report that these have been attacked. Dystopia has been disturbed. We present to you Attack on the Clones.

The 4 artworks have been repurposed with fragmented imagery from Mai 68 riot posters. In May 1968, students in Paris began the largest civil disobedience campaign of the century. What started as a revolt against university systems nearly brought down the French government. Rebellion imagery pasted to walls or carried as placards was crucial to the movement and the Mai 68 posters are a legacy of a protest group that didn’t see a place for themselves in the future.

The posters can be glimpsed in glitch like fashion across the surface of Hewlett’s original clone artworks, layered with silkscreen and vinyl. Attack on the Clones asks questions about replicas, the power of images to change the world, what’s real, what’s imagined, who gets to wield and disrupt power and whether it’s ever possible to stop the future.
