Jamie Hewlett – Kid (2003) – Limited Edition Print – Signed

An ultra rare hand-signed, limited edition serigraph by Jamie Hewlett, purchased from Banksy’s 3rd Santa’s Ghetto show in December 2003.

‘Kid’ was a piece that Jamie Hewlett created for Banksy’s, no defunct, Pictures on Walls art print distribution and artists representation house, which featured many of Jamie’s works over the years it operated.

‘Kid’ first appeared at the 3rd Santa’s Ghetto show in December 2003. 

Santa’s Ghetto 2003 opened on December 2nd in an abandoned store just off Carnaby Street in London. The show contained work by Banksy, Jamie Hewlett, Mode 2 and 3D, among others. Described by Pictures on Walls as a “festive extravaganza of cheap art and related novelty goods from lowbrow artists and trained vandals.” 

Regular collectors will recognise the character as Whitey Action from Jamie’s Phoo Action comic strip. Phoo Action was co-created by Jamie Hewlett and Matthew Wakeham and originally titled Get the Freebies. The strip ran for a year in UK music and culture magazine The Face in 1996 and 1997 and was later developed into a TV pilot by the BBC, which aired in 2008. 

The artwork is detail cropped from a larger piece that only saw limited circulation in a photocopied pamphlet Jamie put together in early 1997, called ‘Look Out It’s O’Grady – Spring Catalogue’97.’

Although a short run of 500 of ‘Kid’ was published, only the first 150 were hand signed. This particular piece is numbered in the early double digits and was purchased shortly after the Santa’s Ghetto launch party, which attracted Damon Albarn and Alex James, who, at the time, was with Blur.
